Teaching and Learning

Teaching writing, English, and history is Winslow’s other passion – especially teaching (and learning from) teenagers.

Waldorf Education has always been a part of Winslow’s life. She and her brother were among the earliest Waldorf home-schooled children when their parents took them on a trip around the world. She spent several months in Jean Zay’s class at the Rudolf Steiner School of New York City, before moving to Italy and then to England. She graduated twelfth grade from Michael Hall School in Sussex, England, with Advanced Level Degrees in English, History, and French, and the Certificate for the Use of English.

College – career – marriage followed. When her own children were in pre-school and kindergarten, she co-formed a home-schooling Waldorf Playgroup in New York City, before moving to the Berkshires where they attended the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School. Amazingly, her daughter Samantha’s class teacher was also Jean Zay!

Winslow received her High School Waldorf Teaching Certification from the Center for Anthroposophy in New Hampshire. High School courses she has taught at the Great Barrington Waldorf High School, the Honolulu Waldorf School, and the Waldorf School of San Diego include History Through Language, The Novel, The Odyssey, Parzival, Poetry, The Romantics, Shakespeare, World Religions and a wide variety of creative and expository writing classes. She is the editor of the GBWHS high school newsletter, The Globe, and she offers classes on all aspects of journalism writing, editing, and production. She also taught middle school English and some main lessons at the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School.

Her favorite advice she received while at the Waldorf High School Teacher Training was from Douglas Gerwin, director of the program. When teaching middle and high school students, he told us,

“Never forget the four F’s:
Be Fair,
Be Firm,
Be Flexible,
And if all else fails . . .
Be Funny.”

Rave Reviews

Sleepless Nights With Heaven Falls Bravo to author Winslow Eliot for this sensual thriller! From an exclusive spa to exotic international locales this novel swept me into a world of intrigue, romance and glamour. The book is also a primer to aromatherapy, as each chapter begins with a description of the origin, medicinal uses and aroma-therapeutic uses of a specific essential oil. As one continues to read each chapter it becomes apparent why each oil was selected as heroine Tess Duncan needs the nourishing and balancing capacities of the specified oil in order to get through the trials which unfold in the novel. The pithy chapters engage the reader whetting ones appetite to continue. If you read it before bed I can guarantee sleepless nights as you don't want to put it down. Although I never left my house, I felt the same rejuvenation of a massage as I read this book and lost myself in Heaven Falls. I can't wait for Eliot to write her next book!
