Softness can be an ideal portal to stillness. Allowing ourselves to feel soft is something that we don’t do often enough. Most of our daily life has a hard edge to it. We protect ourselves with the hardness of suits, cars, offices, schedules, tasks, have-tos, and plenty of shoulds. Be more like soft moss. Moss flourishes by using tiny threads to anchor itself to stones, trees, or the ground—it doesn’t bother with the hardness of roots. It’s more tenderly adventurous than that. It’s also more vulnerable and brave. We see softness almost as a weakness (”she’s soft as a grape”). Instead, feel your softness as a calm, gentle strength and see how far you can travel into your heart of stillness.
