stand on your own two feet.
Yesterday I saw a great blue heron standing very still in shallow water. Its legs were long and thin, and reminded me that our human desire for safety and security can come only from how we feel about ourselves and our surroundings. In its quiet presence, I felt reassured about the future. The great bird stood all alone—not another creature in sight—and appeared entirely comfortable in its aloneness. It didn’t need anyone or anything. It didn’t need to do anything besides be who it was. Eventually it flew — lifting off the ground slowly and deliberately. Steadily and gracefully, it went its own way. It lived its own life, no one else’s.
