My favorite (and I also find it’s the fastest) way to enter into any sort of stillness meditation is to count backward from a number (sometimes it’s 100 and sometimes it can be as low as 20). At the same time I feel myself moving along a staircase of some kind. What’s interesting to me is that the stairwell always shows up differently, and I never know if I’m going to be going up or down or even straight ahead or backward. Sometimes I encounter guides or mystical and mythical creatures on my way into strange and wonderful worlds. The process takes me beyond the initial mental focus, and then beyond even conscious imagination, so that my inner psyche leads me into a wondrous land of magical insight and experience. You might want to try it—it’s great fun. In the beginning it takes an enormous amount of concentration and focus but with practice you can slide into the journey without a lot of effort. Sometimes I find it helps to be listening to shamanic drumming or 432 hz music—it aids the initial necessary focus. But after a while you don’t even hear that. Bring a question with you and pay attention to everything that shows up. And don’t decide whether you want to go up or down or through or around … when we become still we realize that it’s all the same thing and it’s none of those things.
