From very early on, we longed to be seen and heard on a deep level. We wanted to be recognized and valued and loved for who we were and what we could offer. That is a child’s essential nature. Our longings are mostly drummed out of us, as we are taught socialization and rules, hopefully not too brutally. But we can always find our way back to them. Try remembering when you were around five years old. What did you love? What did you long for? There was extraordinary certainty and equanimity in that longing—try to feel that as well. Whenever you’re not sure of things or when you feel low, remember your original self and ask that part of you for help or guidance.
