The practice of mindfulness does not have to be dreary or serious. In actuality, the more mindful we are of our thoughts, the happier we are. We each have the freedom to be upset about something or take it in stride. We can endure something in suffering or we can be tolerant and lighthearted. We can complain bitterly about this or that or we can nod at an event with equanimity and grace and let it go on its way. When we realize the power of our mind, we can be so much happier! Our mind can drive us to despair with its relentless patterns of pointing out iniquities and injustices—or it can drive us with fortitude to heroic action. Our mind can create misery in our hearts by overwhelming us with regrets and bitternesses—or it can imbue us with calm and equanimity. Which mind will you choose?
