People often ask me how, in their hyper-busy-and-over-connected lives, they can accomplish a task, or meet a goal they’ve set themselves, or simply find time to quiet their thoughts. In my experience there’s only one way that really works and that’s to integrate whatever it is we want into our daily lives. We do that by establishing a rhythm for it. Regular sustained practice of anything, including stillness, creates a habit that then creates its own energy. By doing it this way, we don’t have to tug out a great force of willpower in order to squeeze in time or make a choice about our priorities. When we were young we learned the value of good habits: brushing our teeth, for example. After a while, these good habits became interwoven into the fabric of our day so that we didn’t have to argue with ourselves about whether we “should” or “not now” or were we too tired or too busy. We just did it. Use the same method now you’re all grown up. The secret to becoming successful at anything is in the deed of it. It’s not in the thinking or inward discussion you have with yourself. It’s not in the feeling: so don’t wait for the right mood or inspiration. By doing something we … do it. So set yourself the goal of creating a habit of stillness. Consciously set yourself even just a few minutes to be still, every day, for a full lunar cycle of 28 days. After 28 days the conscious effort you’ve made will dissolve into your more unconscious etheric, rhythmic body and becomes simply something that is part of your daily life.
