Riddles have answers, and stories tend to tie things up at the end, but the great mystery of Life doesn’t always provide answers, nor explain, nor justify, much less be neat and tidy. Sometimes it’s hard to understand. Why are we with one person and not another? Why did that life-altering event occur when it did? What was the face I had before I was born? Who will I become? Will this last? In a way, metaphysics explores these questions and, through them, we try to know the meaning of life itself. And in our ongoing attempts to fit together all the bits and pieces of experience, we create some sort of meaning. Yes, we understand the importance of living in the now. Yes, falling in love can be a life-changing event. Family and friends are important. Being kind and helpful matters. We can try to explain suffering in terms of self-development and through it witness our growing compassion. The list goes on. But. let’s face it, it’s all still a mystery.
