Making a living has been at the crux of human existence since the beginning. How do we subsist? Where can we grow food or find work? What is essential? How do we prioritize? For many of us, evolution has swept us so far from our primitive survival needs of food and shelter we hardly remember that aspect of our being human. The current epidemic of anxiety and stress often occurs because since we’re no longer struggling to ensure we have enough food to survive, our bodies get trapped in terror about non-threatening things, like worry about a deadline or a promotion. Survival used to be a way to pull together—what was good for one was good for all. It’s still that way: selfishness, and greed are not going to save our oceans or ensure healthy food sources. We each have the power to equalize and normalize our lives. Choose to live for the greater good—choose to live in harmony with the planet and all her riches—choose to live in symbiotic relationship with community, friends, nature, and self. That is how we make a living.
