Floating is one of the loveliest experiences there is—whether we float in a salty sea, on a rubber raft in a pool, or in our dreams. Sometimes when we hover in that in-between place between waking and sleeping, we are semi-conscious of a feeling of floating. When we’re very happy, we feel as though we’re ‘walking on air.’ But we all can have that wonderful feeling even without having to travel somewhere else or sleep or be happy for a reason. We can experience it through a combination of imagination and meditation. Here’s how to get that feeling going: Start by grounding yourself. Like a waterlily, feel your sturdy stem traveling downward and anchoring in presence and security. Now imagine yourself as a wet lily pad, buoyed by quiet water all around. Feel the sunshine and shade, breathe in the fragrances, the moisture. Breathe into your buoyancy. Feel your lightness of being–feel your levity. Wiggle your fingers and toes slightly, then your neck, gently, and your spine. Release. Smile slightly. Feel lighter. Imagine yourself three or four inches above where you’re sitting or lying down. Imagine yourself opening. Expand the flower that’s inside you. Release your light and color into the sweet air. Feel as though you’re blooming. First picture this, and then try to feel it in your body. Release the image and then try it again. Do this a few times, holding the feeling and then releasing. With practice, you’ll experience the bliss of floating.
