Stillness 5-12: Imagine yourself in a great cathedral with magnificent stained-glass windows or in a sublime mosque with minarets piercing the low sky, or exploring a deep fairy-tale forest starred with wildflowers. When we’re in a sacred place, our inner space expands as well. We sense the immensity of life—as well as its tininess. That’s because the walls or trees or waves surrounding us are symbols for what exists inside us. They’re symbols for our inner life. When we create a sacred space, we are limited only by walls created or dissolved by our imagination.
Even–or especially–when we’re stuck inside our homes, we can still create sacred space. All it takes is a mindfulness. Our home is our temple. Will we feel imprisoned, grateful, or expanded in this sacred space in which we live? What do we attend to? What do we honor? What do we pause to remember in our daily lives?
As we go about our daily rhythms and routines, honor the space you’re in. It has its own dignity, glory, and distinction. It is its own place of worship. There’s a box to be sorted. A bed to be made. A path to cross with a friend or relative. A word of encouragement to speak. A rest. A prayer. A laugh. Budding lilacs. The sound of waves lapping. Remember gratitude, faith, and hope, wherever you are. The great initiation we are currently undergoing is the profound initiation of the daily life.
