Stillness 5-23

be interested and amused.

When someone brings surprising news or an unexpected event occurs for which we are unprepared, our tendency as human beings is to react abruptly. We respond super-cautiously and worriedly. This is old amygdala brain response that nowadays, since survival is not usually what is at stake, we can override through stillness. Give yourself some time before responding to startling news. Take a deep breath. Get more clarity and insight. When you do that, the surprise or even shock morphs into a neutral, mild amusement. We can flow alongside it, gently, supportively. In stillness, we realize the news doesn’t belong to us … let it have a life of its own.
