Protecting ourselves is important. What we’re guarding is our soft, succulent tenderness that exists inside us. We’re not trying to hurt anyone or keep anyone away. No, we’re simply being the stern sentinels of our spirit. It’s our duty to guard our delicate emotions, our fierce passions, our heart’s longing, our soul’s purpose. As children, our thorns are sometimes forcibly removed so that we become deeply wounded or too toughened. It’s a long process to let our thorns grow naturally again so we can feel them as cozy protection. In stillness, we can again feel the deep security that our guardian thorns gives us. When we do, we lift our arms, raise them outstretched, and surrender to being and becoming who we truly are, and not how anyone else wishes we were.
