Go to the periphery

Looking straight ahead is okay, especially when we’re driving or focusing on a screen. But becoming increasingly aware of our periphery reveals things we might otherwise miss. A hawk in flight, for instance. Or a rainbow. The more we practice seeing with our peripheral vision, the easier it is to see out of the sides and even the back of our head. Most of us have had the experience of being aware of someone’s gaze on us, even if they’re behind us. In the same way, we can look out from our mind’s eye and grow our awareness of what is all around us. We are much more sensitive than we think we are. But we tend to back away from that awareness because it seems too strange to understand. Don’t worry about trying to understand it. Just enjoy it. Expand your field of sight. Be aware of sparkles and shadows that draw near you. It’s in our periphery that we glimpse a deer in the forest or a wildflower half-hidden under fallen leaf, as well as fairies, spirits, and angels.
