Go behind it

Stillness 7-13: “To get behind” means to support something—as in getting behind the mule to help it up a steep hill. Are you feeling supported—is there someone or something you trust always to have your back?

“To get behind” can also mean to fall behind in payment, work, or time. Do you feel that you’re behind—there’s something you have to catch up with?

But “to go behind” something is different: It means to dig out the deeper meaning. We can do this by going behind the waterfall of our external thoughts and activities, through the dripping, luminous caves of our feelings and longings, and into the very heart of the mountain that is our greater Self. What will you find? Who is there?

Try going behind an issue or situation instead of getting behind it by supporting it or feeling as though you’re falling behind it. That way you discover you are always supported, because you are the mountain itself. You also discover that can never be behind in anything, because, as the mountain, you are always there. You are both the space and the time of your existence.

Exploring who you are in this mysterious earthly existence of space and time is the best part of life. Dreams are a particularly thrilling way to do this. Deep meditation is another. Or you can hike in nature or sing in the shower. Or play with your tarot cards. Or have a vital conversation with a friend. When you’re doing something you love, imagine you are going behind the silky, silvery, watery veil of waterfall into the heart of the activity itself. Therein lies the magic of going behind it—it’s about delving more deeply into all its secrets.
