What’s interesting about accomplishing a task thoroughly is that we enjoy it more. Doing the laundry, for example, can become a sunny morning of suds, splashing, and camaraderie. Mindfulness is not about seriousness and headiness, but about entirely committing to the endeavor. Whether it’s a creative project or a walk in the park or a lunch date, completely immersing ourselves in the moment frees us inwardly. It relaxes any tension about whether we’re good enough. It releases the stress of all the other things we think we should be doing. Concentrating on the moment at hand brings us into a gentle flow of peacefulness. When we pour ourselves wholeheartedly into the moment, everything becomes lighter, better, and more fun. Be thoroughly present—it’s the secret to joy.
