Love your duty

Taking care of business is essential for a healthy, harmonious life. Whether it’s daily chores or a major conundrum that must be dealt with, we often have to do what needs to be done even if we’re not enthused or peaceful about it. When that happens, try feeling more like a dog. One of a dog’s primary archetypes is about wanting to do the right thing. Wanting to know what is expected of it. Being good, and being affectionate, enthusiastic, and adoring of master and life. When I have to do something that feels burdensome or when I’m feeling sad I try to call in that dog-like energy that is a part of all of us. One thing I’ve learned about sadness or stress is that it can feel so weighty and oppressive it can consume us. It colors everything. But even great sadness is just a feeling, and we can practice letting it have a life of its own. We can let it move through us and onward and away. It’s okay to feel with our whole being and it’s equally okay to let it go when we’ve felt enough of it. Doing what needs to be done helps that to happen. It turns out that doing our duty with enthusiasm and affection actually makes the duty more pleasant.
